P-47D-3-RA Thunderbolt

by Larry Goodell

Description

This is P-47D-3-RA 328th FS/ 352nd FG flown by Capt. William T. Halton England, 1943.

Tamiya's 1/48 scale P-47 offerings are a pleasure to build. Building was straight forward and a simple conversion of reshaping the two bottom cowl flaps either side of the cowling backdates the model to a 3-RA.

Straight from the box, Tamiya's Razorback is a later version with the scalloped cowl flaps. I simply cut those away and fabricated new ones from thin sheet brass.

The only other additions other than kit supplied are the belts and harness. I thought about adding the little bead sight to the forward fuselage but alas memory failed me during construction.

The model is painted with Model Master enamels and decaled with SuperScale's Razorback
Thunderbolt set No. 48-785.
