Description

This is the old Monogram P-51B 1/48 kit. My father bought this kit some years ago and he gave it to me about 1 year ago, so I decided to build it. This is the Ding Hao! version flown by Lt. Col. James Howard. I built this model out of the box. No photoetch.

Although it is a very nice kit, it comes with raised panel lines, so I had to re-scribe them all. I had to make some modifications on this kit to make it looks better. Some of them are:

  • Cut off the flaps to reposition them on extended position.

  • Re-scribed all panel lines.

  • I modified the cockpit radio.

  • Scratch built seat belts.

  • I cut the canopy in six parts, because it comes to leave it closed.

  • The shocks from landing gear were replaced with hypodermic needles as well as the cannons

I painted the model with Model Master paints, using pre-shading and post-shading techniques. I applied a mix of Olive Drab, Military Brown and some drops of Black and Red over Neutral Grey. I decided to use the kit's decals.

Weathering was done with acrylic washes, and with chalk pastels to represent smoke.
